NGCP coordinates with generators to improve power system operations

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) presents to various generation companies its grid operational highlights and updates on projects expected to secure voltage and grid stability, improve grid data management, and decrease voltage losses.

QUEZON CITY, Feb 8 (PIA) – As part of its efforts to continuously improve as the power grid’s system operator, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) regularly coordinates with generation facilities to address various power issues.

NGCP’s System Operations (SO) group handles generation dispatching by maintaining system voltage and frequency, monitoring system reserves, and implementing measures to correct abnormal system conditions.

At a recent interface meeting between NGCP’s SO and Mindanao generators, stronger partnership with industry players, especially the generators, was highlighted as one of the requirements in properly addressing power concerns in Mindanao.

Representatives of the Department of Energy and various power generating companies such as Davao Light, Cotabato Light, and Therma Marine Inc. were present at the gathering held in Davao City last month to discuss and share their concerns regarding the stability and reliability of generation and transmission operations.

The attendees were presented with the past year’s Mindanao grid performance and operational highlights. Major enhancements included the inauguration of the new Mindanao Regional Control Center, the commissioning of the Bislig Substation Shunt Reactor, and the Sta. Clara Substation Static VAR Compensator. These upgrades are expected to secure voltage and grid stability, improve grid data management, and decrease voltage losses. Improvements in the said equipment will regulate the electricity coming into homes so that lights do not flicker and appliances run more efficiently.

The participants were also given an update on ongoing transmission rehabilitation and enhancement projects, providing them with target completion dates. Some of those presented were the following: Balo-i–Villanueva Substation, Villanueva-Maramag 230-kV and Aurora-Polanco 138-kV Transmission Line Project. All projects are targeted for completion by March-June of 2013.

NGCP organized a similar meeting with Luzon and Visayas generators to discuss power concerns relevant to their areas.

NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid. It transmits high-voltage electricity through “power superhighways” that include the interconnected system of transmission lines and towers, substations and related assets. NGCP’s regular maintenance activities, expansion and upgrading projects aim to enhance the reliability and quality of electricity delivered to grid-connected customers like generators, distributors, and large industries.
