Decease of sales last 2011 holiday season noted – DTI

By: Irma A. Guhit

SORSOGON CITY, January 6 (PIA)… In an interview this morning here with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Consumer Welfare Desk head , Evelyn Paguio disclosed the woes of some businessmen especially department stores and the market vendors in  the sudden decrease in sales observed last 2011 during the holiday season.

Paguio said that most of the business sectors here hoping that the holiday season was an occasion for the business sector to be bullish , thir expectation was met with a different outcome.

As observed she said even sales in department stores and other business outlets here were not the same as of the previous year of 2010 as compared to 2011 holiday season.

She said that the impact of the weather was one of the reasons  why people were not spending so much aside from some sectors in both private and government received their incentives just this January and have been thankful too that spending was lessened during the holiday season.

With the continuous rains now experienced here in the province, mobility of people were slackened that most would rather go home and just stay indoors.

According to Paguio even sales in firecrackers and other new near noise merry making device have also dropped in sales as reported by vendors and small store outlets within the province.

With the campaign of government to just go for some innovative means to create noise to welcome the New Year, people have become aware not to purchase firecrackers according to Paguio.

Some department store even reported that they did not make additional orders from their suppliers especially branded food of hams as the result of sales during Christmas time really dropped and with the quite tough money situation, people only tend to buy basic commodities and not the unusual luxurious food that they would prepare during the holidays.

Paguio also explained that even food outlets here have also observed that the sales was not as good as the previous 2010 due also to the weather condition and maybe she said people are aware now only to buy what is basic and only what they need.

Sales in computers have been noted to have increased last year 2011 starting November to December including mobile phones as also reported by the different stores selling these gadgets.

The trend in people becoming savvy in new technologies have an impact also in the increase in sales of these outlets. (PIA-SORSOGON)
