NGCP secures the grid during the 45th Annual Board of Governors Meeting of ADB

QUEZON CITY – To ensure the power grid’s stability and reliability during the 45th Annual Board of Governors Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) recently held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) implemented several measures as part of its contingency plan. As a result, no power interruption or line tripping in Metro Manila and nearby provinces was reported during ADB’s convention.

Part of NGCP’s role as transmission service provider and grid operator is to make sure that power interruptions are averted during the course of the event from May 2 to 5, 2012. In order to achieve this, NGCP finished the restoration of the Las Piñas Substation last April 30, or two days before the ADB event. The energization of the Las Piñas Substation has significantly improved the system voltage, thereby providing reliable supply of electricity to Metro Manila.

NGCP also deferred the maintenance schedule of three (3) major power lines near Metro Manila– one (1) in South Luzon and two (2) in North Luzon to ensure that all transmission lines are available and connected to the grid to avoid congestion. The maintenance of a 750-megavolt ampere (MVA) transformer at the San Jose Substation in Bulacan, which supplies electricity to the north of Metro Manila, was also postponed so that no transformer was shut down and system voltage was secured while the event was ongoing. The maintenance activities of said facilities were originally scheduled on the dates of the convention.

NGCP also coordinated with MERALCO to ensure that the Paco and CBP1A Substations, serving PICC and SMX Convention Center respectively, would be brownout-free from May 2 to 5. The SMX Convention Center was the venue for the opening ceremonies of the meeting.

ADB’s event was attended by some 4,000 delegates, including Ministers of Finance and Development and Central Bankers from the ASEAN and the ASEAN + 3 countries, and representatives from the private sector, civil society and media. For four (4) days, the ADB delegates discussed policies and strategies on economic growth and development.
