Sorsogon Media undergoes DRRM_CCA workshop

PROVINCE OF SORSOGON, June 7 - The two-day orientation (June 7 to 8, 2012) on Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Climate Change Adaptation (DRRM-CCA) for media persons is exceedingly significant seeing the cluster as an intermediate agency which disseminate and shares substantial information to the public down to the community.
In a statement, Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Management Office Chief Jose F. Lopez said that  the Provincial Government’s endeavors would not gain momentum for the public to understand and be stimulated to cooperate and fit into how exactly DRRM-CCA programmes could be implemented. “There are no expanse of advocacy and awareness the government would undertake correspondingly without the complete understanding and participation of the media,” Lopez said.

This media workshop on DRRM-CCA is another group effort alongside World Vision-Green Valley Development Program Sorsogon (WV-GVDP) with the support of Coastal Community Resources (Coastal CORE) and Livelihood Development Incorporated as well as the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO-LGU).

SPDRMO has recently combined with Coastal CORE in a three-day trainers’ training on Participatory Community Risk Assessment and Contingency Planning for 25 barangays of the Local Government Unit of Barcelona last April, 2012.

WV-GVDP on the other hand has previously shared the efforts of the Provincial Government in steering a four-day Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Contingency Planning-Workshop past March, 2011 at the El Retiro in barangay Cabidan for the members of the Barangay Development Council-Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee and City/Municipal Information Officers of LGUs Juban, Casiguran, Magallanes, Santa Magdalena, and Sorsogon City.

PENRO-LGU meanwhile has Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) actively involved in all its activities.

This two-day workshop is expected to contribute valuable data on why disasters occur, forms of natural hazards, facts about Global Warming and Climate Change, basic terminologies and concepts of DRR-CCA, as well as the initiatives of the Province.

“By the end of the workshop, recommendations will be drawn out from the media participants,” the SPDRMO Chief said. “Definitely, it’s one of the expected results of this orientation that we would be able to know how they will act and what their role would be in furtherance of the awareness and orientation of community, “he added.

Predominantly, the training is to assure the public that broadcasters would “know what they are talking about” as far as DRRM-CCA is concerned. “They also must be conversant and well-informed of the issues so that together we would only sing one tune,” the official added.

“Instead of creating confusion, we would be able to create a unified as well as clear methodologies and actions to be taken,” he concluded.

Speaking on behalf of KBP-Sorsogon chairman Armand E. Dematera, Jing R. Henderson said that this most recent partnership is a welcome development since the organization at this time is shoving for the capacity building of broadcasters. She said that this would also strengthen their partnership between LGUs and NGOs in the course of disasters. (Von Andre E. Labalan P.I.O. SPDRMO/PIA Sorsogon)
