PILI, CAMARINES SUR – As part of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) environmental program, the company lent its full support for the coastal clean-up and mangrove-planting activities in Quezon last June 30. Volunteers and employees from NGCP’s South Luzon-District 2 together with representatives from the Department of Education (DepEd), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) planted mangroves along the coastline of Quezon.

“Through this activity, we can restore the mangrove ecosystem and contribute to the improvement of the environment. This will also create habitats for terrestrial animals and provide nursery breeding grounds for aquatic resources,” Governor David “Jayjay”Suarez said at a recent dialogue with Atty. Cynthia P. Alabanza, NGCP Spokesperson and Adviser for External Affairs.

NGCP volunteers headed by Operations and Maintenance group and the Corporate Communications Regional Officer were assigned to plant mangroves at Barangay Villabota, Gumaca, one of the communities hosting NGCP’s facilities. Volunteers have collected 20 sacks of garbage, and planted 5,000 mangroves. The local government, on other hand, through its barangay officials committed to maintain the cleanliness of the coastline and provide proper care to the mangrove to ensure its survival.

The partnership environmental program has drawn public support and successfully developed a collaborative spirit and involvement among local government units, NGCP and other civic groups in protecting mangroves and the coastal zone.

NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid. It transmits high-voltage electricity through “power superhighways” that include the interconnected system of transmission lines and towers, substations and related assets. (NGCP/PIA Sorsogon) ###
